The Social Media Lab is interested in understanding how people’s perceptions of automated moderation systems impact their behavior on social media sites.
Led by Aparajita Bhandari, this project explores the effects of design on bystander intervention using a social media simulation (Truman). Depending on the experimental condition, participants are given varying information regarding who moderated harassment content on the site (was it other users, automated systems or is no information given) to see if they are more likely to flag harassment on the site.
