Aspen studies the emergence and maintenance of norms in online spaces. Specifically, she studies the impact of harassment and hate speech as it relates to identity. Her research is founded on an intersectional framework primarily using surveys and interviews in tandem with computational approaches. Currently, she is studying how online groups create and maintain prosocial spaces while dealing with conflict in order to inform public policy and platform moderation.
